IDF PRESS RELEASE

Yesterday (Thursday), March 9, 2023, an indictment was filed against a Lieutenant in the IDF Armored Corps for causing death by negligence. The indictment was filed after the officer underwent a hearing through his lawyers from the Military Defense.

On May 19, 2021, during Operation Guardian of the Walls, 63-year-old Palestinian farmer Hassan Sami Al-Borno was killed by IDF tank gun fire near the Gaza border. Prior to the incident, the victim and other farmers were cultivating their land hundreds of meters from the barrier. An MPCID investigation was opened to clarify the circumstances of the incident.

As part of the investigation, it was found that the commander of the tank platoon, a Lieutenant, ordered to open fire to distance the farmers. The firing appears to have been carried out in a significant deviation from the safety regulations and the professional standards established for this type of firing, in a manner that resulted in the death of the farmer.

Simultaneously with the opening of the investigation and following a command examination, it was decided to dismiss the officer from his position and release him from the IDF. This was done in addition to further measures that were taken against other officials. The officer concluded his service in the IDF one year ago.

The IDF denounces all violations of the professional rules and guidelines surrounding opening fire.
