The Meaning of Being an IDF Soldier

We asked soldiers in training and their commanders what being an IDF soldier means to them. Here are their answers:

"I always wanted to be a soldier. Ever since I was a little kid, whenever a task needed to be done, I felt that it was my responsibility to do it, even if it was difficult—especially if it was difficult. I always had this inner flame and drive to serve my country and fulfill my duty. Being a soldier means choosing to do more, work harder than others and be proud of it."

"I was raised in a family of soldiers; my dad and my grandfather both served in combat positions, and it's important to me to defend my country. Something my commander told me that stuck with me and shows the meaning in being a soldier is to do everything quietly and modestly, to hold my head up but 'keep my nose down'—to be proud but also humble."

"Being a soldier means understanding the value of friendship. At the beginning of our training, our commander told us, "The people who train with you will be your friends, not only for the next few months or years, but for life. The stronger your friendship is, the better you will operate as a team."

"My parents didn’t serve in the army, but when I enlisted, I chose to have a very positive attitude about it and go the extra mile. I decided I would give it my all, tried out for the special units and ended up being accepted to "Egoz". Being a soldier for me is fulfilling a dream."

"When I first enlisted, I was told I wouldn’t finish my training, yet here I am now, a combat soldier and a commander. Nowhere else in life nor in any other professional field will you get the same tools you get while serving as a combat soldier. Nothing gives you greater meaning. "
