The IAF’s Water Bombs

Water Bombs are devices that carry water instead of explosives. They are used in the IAF’s training in order to help improve soldiers’ navigational abilities and technique.

"The shell looks like a real bomb, but inside there is no explosive. It is lighter and leaves a water stain. The moment the water bomb is launched, it has no navigational capabilities."––Lt. A.––an aircrew member in the 201st Squadron, which operates Sufa (F-16I) fighter jets.

The process of launching the water bomb is complex. When the plane reaches a high enough altitude, it flips over on its back, points at the target with its snout, dives downward and finally launches the water bomb. Once the water bomb is dropped, the water leaves a mark on the ground which helps locate & determine the targeted area within seconds.

The entire process is accompanied by the Israel Nature and Parks Authority, the Israel Antiquities Authority and the Green Patrol. They are all organizations that are designed to protect and administer the environment. The process helps in minimizing possible risks to the environment and in protecting public safety during training. "We don't want to harm animals, plants or valuable areas. We therefore approve every target with all the relevant bodies"––Capt. D., a shooting range officer.
