Jerusalem’s Connection to the IDF
The city of Jerusalem holds major historical importance for IDF history.
Western Wall
After finishing basic training, various IDF units go to the Western Wall where soldiers stand in front of the wall and declare their loyalty and devotion to the IDF. Friends and family gather to witness this momentous occasion. Our Jewish ancestors could only dream of returning home to the Western Wall, let alone having the IDF protect it.
Ammunition Hill
After 8 months of training, the Paratroopers Brigade concluded with a Beret March,not only paratroopers ending at Ammunition Hill. The location plays a significant role in the brigade’s history as the hill was won in battle by the 55th Paratroopers Brigade during the Six-Day War. In honor of the 182 IDF soldiers that were killed in battle at Ammunition Hill, 182 olive trees were planted in their memory.
The President’s House
Israel’s President hosts an annual award ceremony at his residence in honor of Independence Day. The President awards outstanding IDF soldiers and officers from various units with certificates and pins.
Mount Herzl
On one of the most significant days on the Israeli calendar, civilians and soldiers gather at Mount Herzl. Mount Herzl is named after Theoder Herzl, the founder of modern Zionism. His tomb lies at the top of the mountain. Throughout the grounds lie various past Prime Ministers and Presidents of Israel. In addition, victims of terrorism and fallen IDF soldiers' graves are present. People from around the world come throughout the year to honor and learn about those who sacrificed their lives for our country.
Jerusalem holds a special place in Israelis’ hearts. Throughout various points throughout their service, IDF soldiers hold special connections and memories to Jerusalem.
