SGM Gilad Returns to his Battalion After Risking His Life for The IDF
“I promised the District Commander that I would return standing on two feet—and I kept my word.”
SGM Gilad was severely injured during Operation Defensive Shield in 2002 and is now returning to the IDF.
It was just another night during Operation Defensive Shield during the Spring of 2002. SGM Gilad’s battalion received a report regarding wounded individuals who needed to be evacuated from the depths of Jenin. SGM Gilad was one of the combat soldiers in the Home Front Command that arrived at the scene. Although he was physically there, he can’t recall a single thing that occurred after their arrival. It might be due to the shootings and explosions or due to the speed of the traumatic event.
SGM Gilad and his squad members didn’t hesitate for a second. “Our goal was to get to the soldiers, make sure everyone gets out safely, and then leave Jenin,” said SGM Gilad. The squad members successfully completed their mission, but during evacuation, SMG Gilad was severely injured, almost losing his leg.
SGM Gilad was evacuated to the hospital where he began his rehabilitation. “It was a long process, but I resumed my service as soon as I could,” he recounted. “I joined the IDF to save lives, and I will do so for as long as I can.”
After he was released from the hospital, he decided to join the Home Front Command. “To me, the evacuation of victims and soldiers is a supreme value,” SGM Gilad emphasized. Today, he serves in active reserve duty in the 944th Battalion in the Home Front Command’s Dan District. This area of the IDF specializes in evacuations of wounded people in times of need.
"After having my leg amputated due to complications, two Home Front Command Casualty Officers waited for me. Two days later, the District Commander visited me,” said SGM Gilad. The District Commander was in awe of him. “He had enthusiasm in his voice. When he was still recovering and didn’t know if he’d be able to walk again, he promised me that he would participate in exercises, standing on two feet.”
SGM Gilad made a promise, and kept it. Last week he surprised his Battalion. He began training with his head held high and the confidence that he’s always had. “Although I have a new leg, I can do anything. There’s no reason I would miss this.” SGM Gilad proudly said. “The Home Front Command is my family.”
