Simple actions can save a person's life, even if she’s on the brink of death. During the high heat of summer vacation, we are even more at risk. You too can help. Learn how to save a life, IDF style, from this IDF instructor.

STEP 1:

Take the injured person to a safe place, away from any imminent danger. You can now begin the examination.

STEP 2:

If the injured person is unconscious, call for help directly or make sure that someone does so while you take care of him or her.

STEP 3:

Check the pulse for 10 seconds.

If there is no pulse, start CPR immediately, exerting pressure in 30-second intervals at the solar plexus.

STEP 4:

After practicing CPR, check the airways. Open his or her mouth and make sure nothing is blocking the air passage.

If something is blocking the way, gently turn his or her head and remove any blockages in the mouth using your fingers.

STEP 5:

After clearing the airway, begin mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, using your fingers to block the nose. Breathe into the injured person’s mouth twice.

Between each round of mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, wait five seconds and release the person’s nose.

STEP 6:

Make sure that the chest fills with air.

After practicing mouth to mouth twice, start doing CPR again, exerting 30 depressions on the chest and continue until the ambulance or a qualified person arrives on the scene.
