Citations
In the IDF there are four types of citations (honorable mentions), which are given to individual soldiers or entire units.
The decision to award an individual soldier or unit with an honorary citation is made by a senior commander, usually the head of a branch, command or division.
Commanders will recommend to the relevant committee his opinion regarding why the soldier is entitled this medal, for example, because of excellent work in the line of duty, and the committee will be responsible for the rejection or approval of his application.
In some cases, depending on the heroism displayed by the soldier, the committee will recommend a decoration awarded in place of a citation and present its recommendations to the Chief of Staff. Citations are worn on the campaign ribbon in times of war.
