Today (Tuesday), the military court sentenced Mohammad and Zakr Shanatir, both of whom were convicted of carrying out the deadly shooting attack near Beit Hagai in August 2023. In the attack, Batsheva Nigri was murdered and another person was seriously injured.

According to the indictment, several months prior to the attack the two decided to carry out a shooting attack in the Judea and Samaria area with the intent to murder Jews. They made contact with operatives from the Hamas terrorist organization to finance the weapons purchase.

On August 21, 2023, the two arrived in the Beit Hagai area armed with weapons and three full magazines. Upon spotting the Israeli vehicle carrying the late Batsheva Nigri, her young daughter, and another individual, they opened fire, firing approximately 28 rounds at the vehicle. As a result of the shooting, Batsheva Nigri was pronounced dead at the scene. The other individual in the car was seriously injured.

After hearing arguments from both sides, the military court fully accepted the military prosecution's appeal and sentenced the defendants to life imprisonment and an additional 50 years in prison. In addition, the defendants were ordered to pay financial compensation totaling 3.4 million shekels to the victims of the offense.

In its verdict, the military court emphasized the severity of the defendants' actions, which violated the core value of the sanctity of life. The severity was further compounded by the fact that the defendants acted out of ideological and nationalistic motives, requiring a severe punishment.

Throughout the legal process, the military prosecution accompanied the victims of the attack, kept them regularly informed about the progress of the proceedings, and ensured that they received all the rights to which they are entitled by law.

The IDF will continue to operate to protect and ensure the security of all residents of Judea and Samaria, and the military prosecution will act to bring to justice all those who undermine this security. The IDF shares in the deep sorrow of the deceased’s family and will continue to support the victims of the offense.
