Who is the New IDF Military Attaché in Washington?
Major General Politis is expected to soon assume his role as the IDF Military Attaché in Washington.
Brigadier General Tal Politis was promoted today (Wednesday) to the rank of Major General in a ceremony held at Camp Rabin (the Kirya) in the presence of Defense Minister Israel Katz, led by IDF Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir, and attended by members of the General Staff Forum, commanders, and family members.
This promotion follows the recent operation in Iran, Roaring Lion, in which the U.S. and Israel cooperated in targeted strikes on the Iranian terror regime. In the operation, American and Israeli planes flew side by side, thousands of kilometers from home, to dismantle the Iranian regime’s terror capabilities.
This operation and its achievements were partly due to the hard work of the IDF Military Attaché in Washington, who acts as an IDF liaison in the U.S..
Why does the role of the IDF Military Attachè in Washington matter?
Defense Minister Israel Katz said in a statement today: "The strategic alliance between the United States and Israel is one of the central pillars of Israel's security and of stability in the Middle East. Over the past year, and especially in recent weeks, this alliance has been tested in a particularly significant way.
Under the leadership of Prime Minister Netanyahu and President Trump, the depth of strategic ties between Israel and the United States has reached unprecedented levels, particularly during Operation Rising Lion.

Defense Minister, Israel Katz
The world has seen proof that when Israel and the United States act together against shared threats, especially Iran and its proxies, they become a powerful force that shapes the reality of the entire region.
Tal, you are entering your position as military attaché in Washington during an especially important period, a period that brings major challenges but also unprecedented opportunities.
Many tend to view the military attaché's role as focused mainly on procurement and military acquisitions, but the position in Washington is much broader. The military attaché is one of the most important strategic assets of the entire defense establishment. He plays a central role in expanding circles of support, advancing our strategic interests, and ensuring continued cooperation that provides Israel with capabilities that have no substitute.
We chose you to be the senior representative of Israel's defense establishment on American soil because we have full confidence that you will carry out this mission in the best possible way.
I would also like to express deep appreciation to Major General Hidai Zilberman for four years of dedicated, professional, and committed service in this important position. Your work greatly strengthened security ties between Israel and the United States and reinforced Israel's standing during an especially complex and challenging period.
Tal, the rank you receive today reflects the great trust placed in you and the tremendous responsibility that rests on your shoulders. Your success is our success. I wish you great success."
Remarks by IDF Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir
"There are moments in military service when the past, present, and future converge into a single point of recognition, appreciation, and advancement. Both personal and for the IDF as a whole.
The awarding of the rank of Major General and your appointment, Politis, as the IDF Military Attaché to the United States, is exactly such a moment.
A look at your path over more than thirty years of service is enough to understand that you are among those most deserving of receiving the rank of Major General, joining the IDF General Staff Forum, and undertaking the unique mission of leading Israel's most important strategic partnership.
The military attaché in the United States has a unique role not only in military and security affairs but also in political influence, working alongside Israel's ambassador. It is no coincidence that the military attaché in Washington holds the rank of Major General, is a member of the General Staff, and serves as Israel's security ambassador.
He is a vital link between the IDF, the United States military, the Pentagon, and many other organizations, operating across all areas of activity - operations, force-building, strategic planning - and is also responsible for expanding inter-service, intelligence, and technological cooperation.
I would also like to thank Brigadier General Arik Bendov, who filled the attaché's role during this period and did so admirably, and to express appreciation to the entire attaché staff in Washington for their contribution during this unique time.
I am confident that very soon you will fill the gap through immediate action and activity, facing the major challenges to our national security and maintaining the vital relationship with the American defense establishment.
IDF Chief of Staff, Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir and incoming IDF Attaché to Washington, Major General Tal Politis
Tal, you come from the great sea. You learned to deal with currents and waves and to use them to your advantage. The vastness of those spaces and the challenges they present are embedded in your leadership and operational DNA.
Now, as you cross the ocean to strategic work in Washington, I am certain that you will fulfill your mission with that same sense of purpose that has accompanied you throughout your military service - essential in light of the gravity of this moment and responsibility - and with full confidence in your ability to innovate, build, and renew the strength of our partnership in the face of every horizon and challenge. Go forth and succeed."
Remarks by Incoming IDF Military Attaché to Washington, Major General Tal Politis
"More than two and a half years of war have taught us the necessity of standing our ground, demonstrating courage, and acting independently. They have also taught us the need to work in full partnership with international partners in both force-building and operational employment in order to ensure the security and strength of the State of Israel.
At the heart of that partnership lies the long-standing strategic relationship with the United States, as demonstrated throughout the war in general and particularly in the conflict with Iran.
I consider it a great privilege to take a central role in leading this partnership.
In closing, I would like to thank the Defense Minister and the Chief of Staff for their confidence in me and for entrusting me with this great responsibility. I pledge to work tirelessly overseas to advance and strengthen the capabilities and security of the State of Israel."
