The Department of History belongs to the Torah, Assessment and Training Division (IDF) in the IDF Operations Division. The department was established in 1952 as an industry tasked with researching the War of Independence and its lessons. In 1968, the history branch became the Department of History.

The Department of History is the authorized body to interrogate and write the official version on behalf of the IDF of events, operations and wars since the establishment of the state. , Military operations and ongoing security. In times of war, the department, with the help of its reservists, collects operational information, including documents, recordings and presentations, for the benefit of research and learning.

The research in the department is conducted by researchers who specialize in the IDF's fields of work. Researchers in the Department of History have written numerous studies and articles, many of which remain classified and used for military purposes only.

The Department of History is responsible for the development and management of a database for operational learning, managed on the basis of a system of operations (operational documentation and information management). The department publishes the journal "Yesodot", a yearbook that serves as a platform for articles in the field of Israeli military history. Publication in the journal is subject to the judgment of an academic committee. Journal articles are also uploaded to the department's website.

The Department of History holds conferences for the general public and the IDF, and serves as a research institute for military history.
