IDF and ISA intelligence have revealed the Hamas terrorist organization has continued operating below Gaza’s Shifa Hospital, using the thousands of patients, doctors and staff in the building to shield its underground headquarters. Hamas has been exploiting the hospital and the civilians in it for years, including during Operation “Protective Edge” in 2014.

With 4000 staff members and 1500 beds, the Shifa Hospital is the largest hospital in Gaza and is located in the heart of Gaza City. Unfortunately, underneath it lies a labyrinth of tunnels and underground compounds used by Hamas’ leaders to direct terrorist activities and rocket fire and to manufacture and store a variety of weapons and ammunition. Additionally, the hospital’s generators are used to launch rockets.

The entrance to Hamas’ underground headquarters consists of a number of tunnel shafts adjacent to the hospital. Additional entrances are located in various departments of the hospital, including the admissions department, putting all patients at risk.

This isn’t news. Both Israeli and international press have reported Hamas operatives roaming the hallways of the Shifa Hospital in the past (dating all the way back to 2008), and using its resources for their own terrorist purposes.

The Shifa hospital is one of the major examples of Hamas’ endangerment of civilians in Gaza. Their use of the sick and wounded to protect their weapons and terrorist infrastructure is undeniable, unethical, and tragically unsurprising.

Hamas’ misuse of civilian resources and disregard for Gazans’ lives further emphasizes the need for the terrorist organization’s military capabilities and chain of command to be dismantled. The IDF and Israel’s additional security establishments have therefore set these objectives as part of their topmost priorities.

The information on Hamas' use of the hospital as headquarters is based on a wide range of intelligence resources from the IDF’s Intelligence Directorate and the ISA (Israel Security Agency). All intelligence gathered, most of which has not been revealed to the public, was transferred to Israel’s intelligence partners around the world.
