Military Buildup Between World Wars – A Historical Perspective

ABSTRACT: "The Great Depression" may be an instructive historical reference point for a world plunged in a deep post-coronavirus recession. In these years democracies chose to focus on internal issues. The policies of appeasement and delaying the arms race with Germany and Japan emerged as errors after the war. More importantly, economic constraints meant that Western militaries tended to choose "the safe option" – to design force conservatively relative to the military innovation of the period. This article provides topical food for thought on economics, strategy and military reform to Israeli decision-makers. .
