The Place Where the "Melting Pot" Occurred
ABSTRACT: This essay presents the story of the nation contending with a manpower problem in the IDF in the early days of the state. The problem is described from the perspective of the IDF with regards to two elements—1. The army was forced to base itself on a variety of immigrants with meager levels of education and Hebrew ability 2. The army chose to fight for extending the military service of high school graduates who had received their education in Israel.
