The Role of Military Cooperation in Diplomacy

ABSTRACT: In recent years the IDF has changed its concept – from its classic concept of independence and freedom of action, to one of cooperation with foreign militaries in order to fulfill missions and meet goals. This article describes the importance of international cooperation for the IDF, with an emphasis on the US Armed Forces. The author, who served as the Israeli military and defense attaché in the United States, presents in this article a number of insights on the role of the defense attaché, who must possess a deep understanding of the interests of the IDF and the Defense Ministry, and must seek opportunities in foreign militaries that will help Israel find answers to its challenges.
