Identifying Keys to Failure in the Process of Transformation
ABSTRACT: Transformation processes are essential to the success of organizations, especially in a world of increasing frequency and intensity of change. Against this backdrop, the fact that most attempts by organizations to manage transformation processes end in failure becomes all the more pressing. In contrast to the widespread tendency to try to understand the patterns that lead to a successful organizational transformation, this paper brings to the fore the problematic patterns of behavior that characterize those processes that end in failure. This paper extracts lessons and conclusions from a series of case studies from the private, public, and national security sectors. Studying these transformation processes reveals a pattern of behavior that includes identifying the need for transformation, the design and planning of the process, and its implementation. Analysis of the case studies reveals behavior that led to the failure of the process, which brings the author to suggest ways to avoid being ensnared by them.
