What are the IDF Home Front Command's Alert Systems to Notify Israeli Civilians of an Incoming Threat?

Israel’s home front is frequently under threat from missiles and rockets. The IDF's Home Front Command (or HFC) has therefore developed various alert systems in order to warn civilians and give them time to take cover within protected areas. HFC alerts are given in a targeted manner to every populated area, separately and only to the area where the population is in danger. This is in order to minimize the number of alerts every civilian receives, so they may continue living life as regularly as possible, even in times of emergency.

The HFC has three ways to alert civilians. The first way is an alert on the civilian’s mobile phone that appears through the HFC application. The second is through the civilian’s home computer, where a message will appear in emergencies if the HFC’s National Emergency Portal is open. The third is the HFC’s sirens, which are activated in times of emergency directly in the populated areas that are threatened. The Home Front Command warns all civilians of Israel when an emergency occurs.

In times of emergency, civilians will go to protected areas and shelters according to the HFC’s policy, to stay as safe as possible.
Protected areas are spaces in buildings that are built up to code which allow people to take cover in times of emergency.

A public shelter is also an option for citizens who don’t have access to a protected area.
