IDF Spokesperson's Statement, January 1, 2024

Good evening,
Today in the north, we eliminated a terrorist cell that tried to launch three Hezbollah UAVs from within a civilian area in Maroun El Ras in southern Lebanon. We struck before the attack was launched. In addition, we attacked a series of Hezbollah targets in Kfarkela, Maroun El Ras, and Labouna in southern Lebanon.

In Gaza, our forces continue to operate, mainly in the southern region. During the operation in Khan Yunis, our forces identified suspects who were hiding among women and children. During interrogation, it was revealed that they were terrorists, some of whom participated in the terrorist attack on October 7th. Whether the terrorists are hiding in tunnels, hospitals, or by civilians - we will reach them.

In a joint effort of the security systems along with the heads of the local councils, we have coordinated a plan that allows a gradual return of residents to communities situated over four kilometers from the Gaza Strip's border. The plan includes a fundamental change in the defense concept - distributing equipment to the rapid response teams, deploying military forces, establishing new security infrastructures, and more.

We are in a long battle – the return of southern and northern residents is a continuous effort that will progress according to the operational situation assessment.

I want to address the residents of the south and the north – alongside the difficulty of leaving your home, your resilience in recent months is admirable and deserves great appreciation. We understand your concerns. We will listen to every claim and in collaboration with civilian leadership will build the process of returning to the area.

It's a long, challenging road, and the burden of proof is on us. We are obligated to create security for you – which will be reflected in reinforcing forces in the field, establishing a defense area, and other components – even if it takes time.
