The Turning Point 6 exercise will begin tomorrow and last until Thursday, testing Israel's preparedness for an earthquake
The national Home Front exercise Turning Point 6 will take place this week, testing and improving Israel's preparedness for an earthquake. The exercise will commence tomorrow (Sunday, October 21) and run until Thursday (October 25).
Turning Point 6 will improve Israel's preparedness for earthquakes by examining the cellular alert and emergency public broadcast systems, preparing homes for earthquakes, understanding and implementing new directives in an earthquake, and coordinating between emergency services.
Bodies participating in the exercise include the IDF's Home Front Command, the Home Front Defense Ministry and other government ministries, the National Emergency Management Authority, the social services and education system, the health care system, Israel's various regional councils, security and rescue organizations, and other public and private bodies. On Sunday at 11:00 a.m and 7:00 p.m, a one-minute broadcast will be aired on the major television channels: Channel 10, Channel 2, Channel 1, Channel 23, and Channel 9. It will also be aired on the national radio stations Kol Israel and Galey Zahal, as well as regional radio stations. The broadcast will inform citizens that an earthquake is taking place and will include instructions. These Home Front Command instructions should be followed, as they have proven to save lives in the past.
Also tomorrow, the Home Front Command will activate the Personal Message system, testing the sending of alerts directly to cellular phones. Text messages will be sent throughout the country at 11:00 a.m. and 19:00 p.m. As part of the exercise, educational facilities and kindergartens, government offices, and public institutions will practice evacuating buildings. In addition, 250 local authorities will participate in the drill, in coordination with the Home Front Command's liaison units to regional authorities. Traffic and vital services, including hospitals, will operate as usual. The exercise, taking place for the sixth consecutive year, was planned in advance as part of the IDF's 2012 exercise schedule and in coordination with organizations on a national and regional level.
